One Night Stay
The first officer’s girlfriend and I decided to go to Ostrava to spend the overnight stay with them and bought bus tickets through Flixbus
to go to Ostrava on Saturday, July 21, 2018. Ostrava is an industrial city and the capital of the Moravian-Silesian Region, it is the third biggest city in the Czech Republic, two hours away from Brno, located in the northeast of the Czech near the border with Poland.
We arrived there late in the afternoon, almost at the same time the guys landed. We were walking from the bus station toward the main square when Eric called, and we made plans to meet at the place we had stopped. We were in front of the Ostrava New Town Hall, at the Prokešovo námestí (Prokešovo square). We stayed there to take pictures and agreed with Eric that they were going to pick us up there. They were already in the taxi that was going to take us all to the hotel.
In front of the building, there’s a fountain with a very strange Gollum/Sméagol (Lord of the Rings) looking statue. The bronze statue of Icarus which is about 12 feet tall and the third largest bronze statues in the Czech Republic. This statue is in the middle of a fountain in front of the Hall, and it is supposed to symbolize Ostrava’s takeoffs and falls.
Whatever those takeoffs and falls were, by the time we were there Icarus statue was wearing a condom. So, go figure!
When the guys arrived in the taxi, we told them about Sméagol with a condom, and the taxi driver drove the cab inside the square to look at it, it was quite amusing, and we all got a good laugh out of it.
The taxi driver took us to the hotel we were going to stayed at, the Clarion Congress Hotel Ostrava
At the hotel, the weirdest thing; the beds were most uniquely. The twin beds were separated, and the comforter seemed to be for a king size bed, both beds covered with it, including the space between them. We had a little WTF moment! No idea why the beds were like that, we took our time to take pictures and wonder the thinking behind it, but no right answer for such a thing! So, we just pushed the twin beds together and started to look for things to do in the short time we had.
That same weekend, Ostrava was hosting an electronic music festival called Colours of Ostrava.
Eric tried to get tickets, but they were sold out, and we decided to go out for dinner and explore Ostrava at night. Eric did some research online but ended up asking the hotel’s receptionist for a good dinner recommendation. She recommended Bernie’s This restaurant
was a little bit pricey, but it is quite the gastronomic experience worth the money, not only for the food but for the exquisite wine. My choice for white wine is usually Moscato. At Bernie’s, they had a better option. They produced their wine, and I must say it was among the best wines I had ever tried. I ended up buying some bottles to take home.
During dinner, the four of us talked about going to Auschwitz concentration camp in Poland which is about an hour drive away from Ostrava. Nothing had caught our attention from trip advisor’s things to do in Ostrava, and this was the only opportunity that we were going to have, so we decided to take a taxi to Poland the next day.
